Abstract

Excessive ultraviolet (UV) exposure can cause erythema, premature skin aging, hyperpigmentation, and an increased risk of skin cancer. Lemon golden pothos (Epipremnum aureum) leaves contain secondary metabolites, including flavonoids, phenolic compounds, alkaloids, saponins, and tannins, which may provide photoprotective effects. This study aimed to determine the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) values of ethanolic lemon golden pothos leaf extract at different concentrations and identify the concentration with the highest SPF value. A laboratory experimental method was used. The extract was obtained by maceration with 96% ethanol and prepared at concentrations of 100, 200, and 300 ppm. In vitro sunscreen activity was evaluated using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer at 290–320 nm with 5 nm intervals, and SPF values were calculated using the Mansur method. The mean SPF values were 2.87, 5.65, and 10.98, respectively. Increasing extract concentration increased SPF values. The 100 ppm concentration provided minimal protection, 200 ppm moderate protection, and 300 ppm maximum protection. The 300 ppm concentration showed the highest in vitro sunscreen activity.
